BOFIT Visiting Researchers programme

Call for spring/summer 2027

The BOFIT Visiting Researchers scheme enables academics and researchers to spend a period of time conducting research at the Bank of Finland Institute for Emerging Economies (BOFIT) in Helsinki. BOFIT accepts applicants who can make a compelling case for how their presence and work will complement our research as well as enhance BOFIT’s research profile. We value applications with properly worked-out, realizable research objectives to be pursued during the visit. 

We are particularly interested in research that relates to macroeconomic and financial topics concerning the emerging markets, especially China, Russia, India as well as Ukraine and Turkey. Research projects dealing with institutional development in emerging economies are also welcome. In addition, BOFIT values economic research on global trade, capital flows and economic integration. Joint projects as well as other interaction with regular BOFIT staff are highly appreciated. 

Practical arrangements 

Timing 
Spring and summer visits 2027 will take place between February 2027 and August 2027. Visiting Researchers may start at any time during this period, subject to agreement between each individual researcher and BOFIT. There are however no visits in July due to the holiday season.

Duration
Research visits normally run for three to four weeks, but shorter visits may also be considered. 

Applicants
The programme is primarily aimed at active researchers already holding a PhD. PhD students at the final stages of their studies are considered only occasionally. We welcome visiting researchers from academic as well as policy institutions. 

Relationship with BOFIT
We encourage Visiting Researchers to participate fully in the research life of BOFIT, for example by attending BOFIT research seminars, seminars run by the Bank of Finland Research Unit and other events related to research. We expect Visiting Researchers to give a seminar on their research whilst they are visiting BOFIT, and to publish a paper in our Discussion Paper Series. 

Funding
BOFIT offers a salary based on the Bank of Finland wage scale, commensurate with the Visiting Researcher’s professional background and experience. We shall also reimburse economy class travel cost once from home to Helsinki and back. 

Working space
We provide office space as well as access to data resources and the Bank of Finland and BOFIT libraries. There is a free Wi-Fi connection in the BOFIT premises. 

Accommodation
BOFIT helps find accommodation in Helsinki during the visit. BOFIT does not, however, cover accommodation expenses for visitors as they receive their salary here.

Applications must be submitted via the online form

Applications undergo a review and selection process and are considered for approval two times a year.
 
The deadline for the spring/summer 2027 call is 4.10.2026

You will be advised, in writing, of the outcome of your application within four weeks of the deadline for each round. 

Your application should include the following:

1. A cover letter including your contact details and a short summary of the expected contribution of your visit to BOFIT. 
2. A research proposal including an abstract.
3. A curriculum vitae. This should include a list of relevant publications.
