Jian Guang Shen (Chief Economist at Mizuho Securities Asia): China's painful adjustment to avoid the middle income trap


Ph.D. Jianguang Chen is Managing Director and Chief Economist of Mizuho Securities Asia Limited. His research area includes China and Asia Macro-economics and financial markets. He is also Adjunct Professor at the School of Economics at Fudan University, and Research Associate at China 40 Finance Forum.

Dr. Shen holds Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Economics from the University of Helsinki, along with undergraduate study in Fudan University. He received Yrjo Johnsson fellowship to pursue post-doctoral research at the Department of Economics of MIT.

Before joining Mizuho, Dr. Shen was senior economist or economist at the IMF, European Central Bank (ECB), OECD, Bank of Finland, ETLA and China International Capital Corporation (CICC), in addition to being a visiting scholar at PBOC. He was one of the authors of the OECD book “China and World Economy” in 2002. 

Dr. Shen is a contributing columnist at global and domestic leading financial newspaper and magazines, such as FT Chinese, Caijing, Caixin, Shanghai Securities Journal and Economics Observers, and appears frequently on Bloomberg, Reuters, CNBC, NHK, CCTV and Phoenix TV. In the 2011 Institutional Investor’s (II) survey, Dr. Shen was ranked the top Economist in China A share Research. He was also voted Economist of the year in 2011 by the leading Chinese business network, in addition to being the Top Forecaster of the year. In 2008, he was ranked with the CICC team as the NO 1 Economist Team by Chinese main broker surveys.
